Dear Sir Frederick,

Ever since the change of Government in Portugal

the Chinese press has been agitating for a recovery of

Macao, and two days ago four Chinese gunboats were sent down

there and are anchored at the entrance to the harbour. The

ostensible excuse for this move is, I presume, the exodus of

Chinees consequent on the recent military outbreak. It is

also rumoured that Chinese troops are converging on the

frontier. I am accordingly this evening sending a məmbər

of my staff to Macao to report on the situation, and an

myself going down, for dental purposes, to Hongkong tomorrow

night. I shall take advantage of the opportunity to do

myself the honour of calling on you on Saturday.
